In the backwoods of Tennessee, frightened boys became veteran soldiers, and the nation learned the horror of a modern war. The Battle of Shiloh was fought on Sunday, April 6th and Monday, April 7th, 1862. Union forces were under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant, while Confederate forces were commanded by General Albert S. Johnston. It would prove a shockingly bloody battle, and with the battle died all dreams that the Civil War would be over quickly.
